Red with Passion

If your new to my posts WELCOME. I try to make it as easy to get to the goods as possible so if you want to check out the item list in more detail, just click on the picture and it will bring you to more pictures and details!

This week has not been the best one for me. A lot of personal things came up that got me down but what got me through this week was Love and Passion for what I do, for the people around me and for my family.  When things are going rough it always put things in perspective for me that my life really isn’t as bad as it seems at the moment.  I have an awesome life, an amazing boyfriend, a family that loves and supports me in all the things that I do, great friends even though most of them don’t even live in the same province as me but I feel their love, I have food in my tummy and roof over my head. I really could not ask for anything more!

So this post is about Passion and Love and what better color describes this then RED!

I wanted to start off this post with an item that I just love from my sister’s shop. My sister is such an amazing person and the bonus with her is that she is my sister and my best friend all in one! She has just started her shop up with jewelery she makes as well as some great vintage jewelery she has found along the way! This red heart necklace is one of my favorites in her shop (along with the beautiful Vintage Green Necklace). She is having a HUGE sale on right now with everything in her store 30% off! Her shop can be found at Beady Body on Etsy.

For those of you that know me know that I am in love with cameras (mainly old ones!) If I didn’t already have a Polaroid at home to capture the moments I would buy this beautiful red camera. It has been tested and works and YOU can pick it up at 8 Bits on Etsy.

Now I love hats and vintage hats just always have so much more personality! I just wish I looked good in hats because this fire engine red hat would be mine for sure! This beauty can be picked up from Fancy Lucky Vintage on Etsy.

To me this top is so elegant in bright scarlet red with lace, satin ribbon and button down V neck. This would be perfect for any occasion and looks so soft! This great find can be found at Tialey Vintage on Etsy. Make sure to check out her great SALE section as well for up to 50% off items.

Now for those of you who have not checked out Santoki Vintage I strongly suggest that you do! She specializes in 80′s dresses and foot ware and let me tell you she has some of the best around! I have had my eye on this beautiful 70′s Hippie Dress for some time now. I just think the color is amazing and metallic gold threads woven throughout the dress it is to die for.

Red is by far my favorite color and when I stumbled across this 70′s Lipstick Red bag it was like love at first sight! It’s large enough to hold all your goodies and sassy to boot! This wonderful bag can be found at another great Canadian Shop Sassy Vintage.

I was shopping for a pair of red boots for myself but man it is hard to find boots I like in a size 6 let alone amazing red boots like these Italian Booties! If they were my size I would snag them up so fast because for $29 you can not go wrong! If you are a size 7.5 these are the boots for you. These great boots along with other amazing items from bO mode on Etsy are part of her sale 20% off everything in the store!

Last but not least with the holidays coming up this great Blossom Ornament from Lost and Fawned would look beautiful hanging from anyone’s tree this year.  She also makes great vintage inspired jewelery as well! She has a great Holiday SALES on now! Check her out on Etsy at Lost and Fawned.

To all my American readers I hope you have a very HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Thanks for checking out my picks of the week. I hope you all have an amazing weekend :)

Don’t forget to check out my shop EVERYTHING in the store is 20% OFF from NOW until Mid-night Monday November 30!

The Color of Cranberries

Hello fellow Vintage fashion enthusiast!

I just can’t seem to shake the theme of feathers these days! With Thanksgiving being tomorrow! You are sure to have your pickings for a lovely Thanksgiving dinner wardrobe. The inspiration for this weeks Thanksgiving themed color pallet is “Cranberries!”

Wouldn’t you know, that while searching high and low for some more holiday inspiration? I came across this fabulous 1940′s rayon feathered print dress! And it has the exact color palette I was looking for, in it! Double whammy!

As I have said before, there is a way to get in the mood and spirit of the holiday in style without being over the top. This dress is just the perfect little hint of the holiday and touch of 1940′s classic style.

1940's feather dress

You can view and purchase this snappy little dress over at the fabulous Dorothea’s Closet Vintage shop!

So speaking of cranberries, how much more cranberry can you get than these pair of shoes! Not only are they completely 1940’s fabulous, but they also match the colors of the dress in perfect harmony. They remind me of the exact same color that those delicious bright cranberries look like, perfectly placed in a bowl, sitting on the Thanksgiving dinner table!

1940's Cranberry Shoes

These divine shoes are located on Etsy seller Starlet Vintage’s page!

Oh wait! Did you think I was going to leave you without a lovely hat to match? Not this crazy hat lady, hat’s are a portrait of the 1940′s.  So here is a swell one, sure to knock your 1940′s socks off and perfectly match your lovely cranberry colored feather dress and shoes!

1940's black & fushia

Another hat on Etsy seller tammym1972′s site! She definitely has a store full of some amazing Vintage hats!

I would like to take this moment to reiterate the fact that. I realize not all of the items posted are available for everyone to purchase. Based on different size needs, prices, etc., but they can also be taken for pure styling inspiration and era research!

Thankful Thursday

Although virtually everyone we know has been touched by the economic downfall in one way or another, there are still many things in each of our lives to be thankful for. For some of us it is something as simple as a sunset, a cup of coffee awaiting you in the morning, or a time with a great book. For others it may be something more significant, such as the survival of a health scare, or the birth of a child. I think all of us would say that are thankful for our friends and family.

While there are many things that I am thankful for I especially want to say Thank You to all those out there that contribute to AlleyKat’s. There are many people behind the curtain that help to make the magic happen. From our one of a kind fantastically talented web designer to our incredibly informative and ever so witty Guest Authors, AlleyKat’s would not be what it is without you. We are all thankful for our readers, as we are thrilled to be a part of yoru day. Whether you stop in to visit us daily or weekly, you are the reason we are here.

Part of what makes the holidays so special for us are the traditions we follow. While we don’t have anything elaborate that we do every year for Thanksgiving, the routine we follow is ours. I plan on getting up early to start the cinnamon rolls and coffee. It is an annual tradition to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which we do in our pajamas of course. I also happen to make the single best pumpkin pie one has ever had the pleasure of eating. So, in the midst of the parade watching, coffee drinking, cinnamon bun eating and pajama lounging at some point I will be baking up a storm too. There are lots of people that are thankful for pumpkin pie at our house.

One of our other traditions happens to take place after the big holiday feast. It revolves around getting up at the crack of dawn and actually being happy about it. Can you guess what it is?? No..it isn’t running off the pumpkin pie we ate. Although I was told that one burns approximately 148 calories an hour while going through these motions. It is Black Friday of course! We spend the afternoon on Thursday cleverly plotting our path. Hoping to hit all the right stores at all the right moments. I know that there are a lot of you that do the same. In honor of the upcoming shopping festivities AlleyKat’s will be offering two sales.

Black Friday- 40% OFF of Anything in the store.

Cyber Monday- Free Worldwide shipping

AlleyKat Gift certificates are now available as well. The 40% sale price for Black Friday does not apply to gift cards.

Both sales are only available for use on set specific dates. The only thing you have to do to qualify for the sale price or free shipping is tell us one thing you are thankful for. Send us a short note in the seller comments upon checkout and we will refund the saved amount via PayPal. If you opt to purchase with a check or money order please send us a message from the item you intend to buy so that we may update the listing.

We wish you all a wonderful and restful Happy Thanksgiving. Don’t be afraid to eat an extra piece of pumpkin pie.

Makeup Mondays–Brand Spotlight

PearlA warm hello again to my readers!  Since we finished our vintage face how-to series last week, today we are going to start a new feature—a spotlight on retro cosmetic brands.  I’ll be featuring different brands on a regular basis, along with other vintage tidbits and articles, in order to make Makeup Mondays a well-rounded resource.

Today’s brand is Julie Hewett; I made mention of this brand in last week’s article covering lipstick, and it’s definitely worthy of its own feature article!  Julie Hewett is a well-known veteran makeup artist actively working in Hollywood today, and she is also a member of the exclusive Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.  When working on the set of Pearl Harbor, she was unable to find a suitable Technicolor-red lipstick—and so her cosmetic line was born.

JHThe  Noir Collection, six red lipsticks that run the gamut from a wine-red 20s shade to a bright crimson 1950s red, is perfect for vintage lovers.  The shades are wonderful, period-perfect reproductions, and the formula is exquisite as well.  Unlike dye-based lipsticks, the Noir reds are pigment-based—this makes for rich shades that stay true longer, and that won’t  fade to a less than desirable stain.  Pigment-based lipsticks also won’t react with the chemistry in your skin—no dreaded fuchsia quick-change act to be found here!  The color can also be removed completely and will not stain the mouth; should you want to change the shade you are wearing, there will be no color left behind to alter the next shade you apply.  The Noir collection also including matching lip liners of equally good quality; liner is a must with intense lipstick colors to prevent bleeding and help the color stay longer.  As it can be hard to find the right shade to coordinate with your lipstick choice, it is always nice to have a perfect match at the ready!

twilightJulie Hewett also offers up both powder and cream eye shadows worth checking out.  The Hue Colors are shimmery creams that are perfect for creating a glossy 1930s eye; Lilies in the Snow is an excellent shade for this, and the other shades are pleasing as well.  Application of the Hue Colors takes a bit of work (the lid must be properly prepped with foundation/powder, the color applied in a thin layer, and finished with a dusting of colorless powder), but this is a unique product worth checking out.  The powder shadows are smooth and creamy, and there are many shades to choose from to create a vintage eye (Cappuccino and Runway are two lovely neutrals; her palettes, including Twilight and Petit Four, are worth looking into as well.)

Her Cheekies and Shimmies are interesting products as well; Cheekies are lightweight creams that can be applied as blush or lip color, and Shimmies are delightful highlighters for cheeks and eyes.  The Rosie Cheekie is a wonderful  flushed pink, and Jami is a nice neutral pink; Goldie Shimmie is perfectly glamorous, and Pinkie is a soft rose gold.  Again, application of cream products necessitates a bit more work, but the payoff is worth it in the end!

So there you have it—a brief review of Julie Hewett.  This unique line is a must for vintage lovers to check out!

xoxo,

Amanda Lee

Vintage Black Friday

We are officially one week away from the biggest shopping day of the year. Many of us have already begun accumulating goodies here and there. I personally buy year round. But there is something to be said about the Black Friday specials that gets a lot of us up early in the morning.
A fellow Etsian and vintage loving site Gypsy Brocante recently started a Vintage Black Friday theme post thread. Every Friday since late October several store owners and blog posters have brought their versions of Vintage Black Friday to the table. The rules are simple. Post items that are black.

So below I have included a few of my Vintage Black Friday picks. Now before you get all bent out of shape, I did follow the rule mostly…I figure it is more of a guideline right? Oh give me a break..they all have black on them.

First up is this Spanish filigree styled hair comb from the 1900′s. Available in the VintageVue shop for only $48.00 this comb would make a great Christmas gift. Have a Gift of Magi Christmas and grab up this comb fast!

Next up is this military inspired trench coat. Made from wool and russian rayon it is certain to provide a warm and cozy Christmas. This coat dates to the 1970′s and is available with one of our favorite vintage sellers, GreatestFriend on Etsy. This coat is listed below cost at only $75.00. Add it to your wish list and if it comes down to it, downright beg. It’s worth it.

blacktrench

Now I realize that this one may be bending the rules a bit..but I had to include it. It couldn’t be helped. Besides The Stones are classic…just hum “Paint it Black” while reading and we will all still be within the rules.

Who doesn’t love 80′s glam rocker shirts? It is a vintage must have. Not every day can be an Audrey or Marilyn day…we have to eventually clean the house. Even though I love vintage I refuse to master the mopping in stilettos look. Therefore, rocker T’s come in handy.

This authentic 1989 Rolling Stones concert T-shirt is available with RamblinVintage for $89.00. Surprise the vintage loving rocker in your life!

stonest

Those of you that are avid AlleyKat readers know that we don’t do vintage posts without shoes. We aren’t capable. It is something deeply engrained in us. Shoooooooes..can make or break an outfit. Shoes like this speak for themselves. Just promise me you won’t mop the floor in them. Dating to the 1950′s or 60′s, these lovelies are made of leather and feature a metal stud design across the toe. Available with PreserveBoutique that is new to Etsy. We love the shoes and will certainly be keeping an eye out for more great finds to come.

For the Hollywood Glamour lover in your life we have a steal for you. This exquisite Betty Rose suit dates to the 1960′s. Made of wool, the skirt is a curve hugging pencil and the jacket has collar outlined in authentic mink. This suit is in excellent condition and is available at AlleyKat’s for $299.99. Certain to be a wardrobe favorite revisited time and time again. A vintage suit like this is a one of a kind find, only suitable for that one of a kind special person in your life.

bettyrose

The last offering we have for this Vintage Black Friday post is a beautiful copper colored wigggle dress. It features a lace overlay in tiers…not that it needed it. But it is the icing on the cake..only problem? It is itty bitty..and doesn’t fit me. But I am betting that you know someone it would be perfect for. Sorry..I don’t have a song for you to sing on this one either. I am flat out breaking the rules I guess…but I couldn’t pass it up. It does have black lace..

Available in the Rbahjat shop on Etsy for $135.00. The seller believes the dress was handmade and is custom couture. For more information on sizing please contact the seller directly.

Make sure and check out all the great Vintage Black Friday finds on the other sellers blogs too! Even our Guest Author House of Hearts has jumped in on the fun, and she always comes upu with gret one of a kind finds.

Be sure to check AlleyKat’s soon, we have something special in store for all of you for Black Friday! Our sale information will be released on Thanksgiving Day.

Obtaining Royal Status

Queens-logo-October

Who hasn’t wanted to be a Queen at some point in their lives? As a child I imagined being a Princess, having not fully realized the possibilities of upping the ante to queen bee status. However once older and married I quickly proclaimed myself as Queen of All…within my property stakes of course. As much as I would love to see my Queendom expand, it is not really a feasibility, as I detest politics, and have the birthright of nothing more than independence. Yay me.

For all of those out there that have felt the same way, I have done the digging for you. On this vintage loving site you too can be Queen for as long as you visit..or as often as like. Subscribe to the informative daily emails and the vintage know how you come away with is priceless. We are currently running a special sale for all Queen members. So grab your carriage and head to court!

Feather Your Fancy

I just can’t seem to shake the theme of feathers these days! With Thanksgiving being, less than two weeks away. You are sure to have your pickings for a lovely Thanksgiving inspired dinner wardrobe. Staying within the lines of the color palette, of fall and Thanksgiving. Yellow would have to be another color to add to the list of browns, and oranges.

Well feast your eyes on this dress! A 1940’s crepe and rayon mixture complete with both large plumes, or feathers as you wish to call them, and they are colored the perfect shade of festive yellow to boot!

You can see this amazing dress at Kitty Girl Vintage! She has some smashing dresses in her boutique.

Not only do we have the dress! We have the perfect hat to match too! This fine hat is a one of a kind New York Creation, 1940′s tilt hat, that is just stunning to look at! Simply divine in every way! Color, shape and matching feather!

Yellow Feather Tilt Hat

Available to purchase on Esty seller’s tammym1972 store, you are sure to see a delightful arrangement of Vintage hats!

Because I am a stylist by nature, I usually have to do the whole sha-bang. That means head to toe and every detail in between! I love to style wardrobe pieces, find the perfect match and add the finishing touches. So with that being said, you know I couldn’t leave you without the shoes!

In all their glory, here is a striking pair of black 1940’s velvet platform sling backs. These babies are in mint condition, and have a very unique scalloped detail.

1940's velvet slingbacks

You can find these gorgeous shoes on Ebay under Vintage shoe expert and seller Ebra by Amers store!

Well, we have successfully completed another classy and Vintage stylish Thanksgiving themed wardrobe! Even though the spirit of Thanksgiving inspiration for these outfits, comes from the feathers and colors! Believe me I would sport these garbs any day of the week!

On another note, since we are on the subject. I would like to take this moment to reiterate the fact that. I realize not all of the items posted are available for everyone to purchase. Based on different size needs, prices, etc., but they can also be taken for pure styling inspiration and Vintage research education!

Please stay tuned for the next post! It will be the final Thanksgiving themed wardrobe post for the month of November and is sure to be a real pleasure!

I’ll be seeing you!

XOXO,
~Syd Divine

The Icing on the Cake

Tru-Color

Hello again, my wonderful readers! I hope you enjoyed last weeks article about brows and liner; this week we’ll be discussing the icing on the cake, if you will: Lipstick!

Lip color and shape are perhaps the easiest, most memorable ways to achieve a vintage look. Mouths were very defined, painted in luscious, eye-catching shades, and each era had its own distinct shape for the mouth. In the 1920s, bee-stung lips were all the rage, and came about due to the products available at the time. Slippery and with little staying power, the best way to ensure that your lipstick wasn’t a smeary mess in a very short time was to apply three thumb prints of color—a dot in the center of the lower lip, and two dots of color of the upper lip. The effect created was also known as the cupid’s bow, and the 20s mouth is very doll-like indeed. As the 30s rolled around, the desired shape became full and elongated, with the top lip exaggerated into the style known as the “cruller” or “Crawford Smear” . The overdrawing of the mouth stayed with us into the 40s, though during this time the lips were less exaggerated, with more of a natural fullness. And in the 1950s, women continued to exaggerate their top lips, moving away from the rounded look popular in earlier eras, and instead drawing the cupid’s bow into a pointed shape.

Flying ColorsNow, when it comes to color, red is always a popular vintage choice across the decades. But don’t feel as if you are limited here—the red shade category is vast, with a color to suit everyone! Reds run the gamut from cool to warm and soft to bright; you may need to try several shades to find the one that best suits you, but this is a challenge worth undertaking. As a cool-toned, fair blonde, I favor bright blue or true red shades to add oomph and a pop of contrast. Warm-toned complexions will do well to try warmer, orange-based shades, or those with a brown base. If you have trouble with red lipsticks pulling a quick-change act and turning a less-than-desired fuchsia tone, you might try experimenting with a brown-based brick tone, as these may pull a truer red shade when paired with your chemistry.

Color trends by the era varied—orange tones, deep reds, deep brownish reds, and plums in the 1920s; light rose, raspberry, and Chinese red in the 30s, cherry red, crimson, vermillion in the 40s, along with raspberry, light red, and reddish orange shades for more natural looks; and in the 50s, everything from light pinks, bright pinks, various reds, and coral and pink-orange tones. As you can see, red is not the only shade to choose from—pinks and corals are always quite suitable for a vintage face, as are softer rosy shades, shocking pink, and bright corals are all good options to look for.

When wearing red, lip liner is a must to define the shape of your mouth and help prevent the lipstick from straying as well. Application with a lip brush also helps ensure a smooth, even application. To balance the face, one can carefully sculpt her mouth according to her face shape; makeup artist J. Del Russo advised women in Charm Magazine to carefully make up their lips, like so:

The Long Face—Outline the lips using a brush; beginning at the outer corner of the upper lip, draw a line toward the center. Then repeat the process from the opposite corner. Eliminate any point at the cupid’s bow, as this will only tend to elongate the face. Now, staying within the natural lip line, outline the bottom lip and fill in the outline. For a more generous and rounder looking mouth, it Is often advisable to build up the size of the upper lip slightly, and it is most important to accentuate the corners.

The Round Face—In the round face shape, correct application of lip rouge is all important. Follow the directions for outlining the lips as given above, but in the round face technique, accent the cupid’s bow. In drawing the lower lip, take care to “square” the outline and you achieve this by drawing a firm out curving line from the corners to the center of the lip in a sort of reverse cupid’s bow. This squaring does wonders for eliminating the roundness of the jawline.

The Oval Face—Brush as directed for the long face—but follow the natural lip line and draw the corners of the mouth clearly so that the full natural curves are enhanced.

liptone_boxFavorite reds of mine include MAC Ruby Woo, Russian Red, and Dubonnet; Besame Red, Cherry Red, and Red Velvet; Revlon Cherries in the Snow, Fire and Ice, Love That Red, and Really Red. For day-to-day wear (and for many of my shoots), I am also a fan of a liquid lip color made by Lip Ink; this indelible product looks like a traditional lipstick, but won’t smear, bleed, or transfer to your glass or beau. It’s the bees knees, for sure! Lip Ink Red is quite similar to MAC Ruby Woo; other colors of interest include the brick shade Lava Red (similar to MAC Dubonnet) and the orangey Fire Red (similar to Revlon Fire and Ice.)

And there you have it—a guide to making up your vintage face from start to finish! Stay tuned for another exciting makeup article next week!

xoxo,
