Now that we have the ball rolling I thought I would throw out a sparkly sample. Some of us have taken to gluing shine and sparkle to even our modern day cell phones. There seems to be a general fascination with all things glittery. Why? Perhaps because it resembles some form of glamour. Obtainable glamour. For those of us that are unable to frequent Cartier and Tiffany’s a good old fashioned Bejeweled kit has become a long lost friend. Providing what has become so hard to find. Affordable glitz. I too miss the glitz and glamour that can be found in objects of the past. But don’t expect to see me tackling the teenager at Walmart that has some how managed to find the last hidden bejeweled kit. I much rather buy an actual piece of sparkly sunshine from the past.

Take for instance this 1950’s compact. It doesn’t get more glamourous than this. This gold compact made by renowned jeweler Jean Schlumberger (1907-1987) takes the form of a zinnia. The top is embellished with red, blue and yellow natural sapphires. Yes, that would be REAL sapphires. This compact is the style that would have been carried by Audrey Hepburn, Greta Garbo, Elizabeth Taylor and the Duchess of Windsor.

Jean Schlumberger, 1950's

Now, if I have your interest. This lovely piece of history that provides as much glitz and glamour as one girl could possibly stand…CAN be yours. Just sign on the dotted line and pass over a check. Please fill the amount line in for a staggering $40,000.00. Yep, I said 40 thousand dollars. You said you wanted glitz and glamour…

Okay. Back to reality. Most of us can’t afford to carry a $40,000.00 compact around in a purse. But we can have the glitz and glamour of past without spending our fortune to get it. How about this Evans compact. Also dating back to the 1950’s, the Evans company were known for quality. Although the sparkly gems are not the real deal..they do still sparkle. And for this one a body guard isn’t required.

Evans compact, 1950's

This lovely compact is much more affordable, but offers the same glimpse into the past. A compact in this style would cost anywhere from $75.00 t0 $125.00 depending on the designer and the condition. Vintage compacts can be found in virtually any color, shape and size. Many different materials were used and the styles are as unique as the person that carries them. So if you are on the lookout for a little glitz and glamour in your life, why not start with a compact. For more information on the compacts shown please email me directly. Watch for the Alley Kat Store coming soon, where there will be an assortment of vintage compacts available.
