This beautiful mint condition Singer Featherweight 221K sewing machine circa 1961 is nothing more then amazing! It comes complete with the original 52-page instruction manual, pedal and bobbins, and a hard black case lined with an eloquent rose-embossed satin.  This amazing machine comes from Future Leader 78.  This machine is appraised at $600 but is being sold for $400 as it is a fundraiser item which will providing enough money  to complete a bath-house for an impoverished school.  Check out Future Leader 78 for more information and support their cause.

Now what is having a sewing machine without some amazing patterns to sew. The patterns I picked are very much inspired by Jackie Kennedy’s fashion.  Although Jackie had Oleg Cassini design her wardrobe while she was the first lady we can all attain her fashion by doing it ourselves! This great 1960’s patterns can be found at Historically Patterns along with hundreds of other great vintage patterns.

I am not going to lie I have never looked on etsy for fabric but there is an amazing selection of vintage and new vintage inspired fabrics to choose from. This first piece of rare vintage silk with hand printed butterflies and flowers would be great for a dress, skirt, scarves or if you are more crafty I think it would make a beautiful clutch. I love the color combination of this piece of vintage Japanese kimono silk hand painted with peony iris and eggs. I would love to use this piece of silk for a nice flowy dress. What would you use it for?  This great silk can be found at Suzu SilksnStuff.

While I do garden, as often as possible (which is incidentally not often enough to keep many living plants), there are several things that we do not grow here at the house. So in order to stock our cabinets and set our meals we attend the Farmer’s Market once or twice a week. I try to take my kids with me as often as possible. Both of them enjoy it and I usually enjoy taking them as well. That is until my 4 yr old starts to “sample” the homemade soaps. I can still picture his puckered little face. Darling I tell you. Memorable for the both of us to say the least..well, and probably the soap maker as well.

Some of you may be fortunate enough to live in an area where the Farmer’s Market is available year round. Unfortunately, I do not. However throughout my many years attending the event I have made several farmer friends in which I can visit to stock up on items that they may have in season. I have compiled a short and sweet list for you to get started on your own venture to the market today.

The last costume party attended..yes, that is me..as a Pirate Queen. All hail Johnny Depp!

At our house we tend to have certain seasonal rituals. Before the start of school we make entirely too large pots of chocolate pudding. During the Christmas festivities we gather friends and decorate Gingerbread Houses. As the air cools and the leaves turn we pick up supplies for our Fun Fall Mix. It is basically a kid friendly (because candy is involved) Chex Mix. Always a hit, and never lasts long. While there are several things we do in order to celebrate the oncoming Halloween holiday one of our family’s favorite is the Pumpkin Palooza.

A sort of a scavenger hunt for the perfect pumpkins of all time. At the start of our venture we all believe that certainly the previous year’s pumpkins couldn’t possibly be out done. They were too perfect. For whatever reason they were chosen. We all have different reasons for why we pick our pumpkins. My husband prefers the taller, thin ones. I, myself like white pumpkins with noticeable handles. I always turn them into lovely little noses. The kids spend the evening trying to out do each other..and their preferences change as often as the wind. As much as I would like to say that I am the “always prepared” type, I don’t always make the cut. It is dark, cold, and somewhat rainy here but I plan on bundling myself and the extended family up and heading to the pumpkin patch today. I’m not sure if I will find anything as elegant, and certainly not as vintage as what I have selected for you. I am not even sure that I will find one that competes with last year’s pick. We do love the hunt though, so off on a scavenger hunt we go.

Our kids will tell you time and time again that their favorite part about Fall is leaves. Not the colors, although they do admire them as I do, but the raking of them. No. We don’t have mutant Stepford children. No. We don’t hold twinkies out on sticks in front of their noses as they rake. The secret? What is more fun than a pile of colorful leaves? In Spring as all are admiring the carefully landscaped array of roses, hydrangeas, lillies and lavendar, the children are under constant NO TOUCH supervision. Not as much fun for them. But once Fall hits and the trees bloom into cascading waves of embers smiles instantly adorn little faces. Yes, they know that work is ahead. However they don’t seem to mind because the annual fun of running and diving thru piles of crinkling leaves certainly outweighs the occasional blister.

Most of us are constantly going in and out during the fall season. While a coat is a necessity, and a great coat is nice to have, it is nice to be somewhat layered. It must be a Pide Piper of sorts because I hear the same faint howl summoning to join in. What is the deal with that? So apparently Columbus and his discovery is important enough to have his very own dedicated day. Okay. I get that. But why is it only important enough for banks to be closed. It isnt like Christmas or Easter when the entire country shuts down. It isn’t even like Valentines Day when everyone gets a guaranteed night out. There isn’t any free flowing champagne like New Years Eve. So, what is it? What makes Columbus Day? And even more important..what are WE supposed to do on Columbus Day? I didn’t have a clue, so I went in search of some information. Since I finished with term papers long ago I will pass on the “Columbus Day Cliff Notes” that I compiled for you.

1. The first recorded celebration of Columbus Day took place in New York City (of course, where else would you party?) On october 12th in 1792.

2. In 1892, the 400th celebration of Columbus Day, the Pledge of Allegiance written by Francis Bellamy was recited publicly for the first time.

3. Colorado was the first state to recognize the holiday, in 1905.

4. In 1937 President Roosevelt proclaimed October 12th Columber Day.

5. And in 1971 President Nixon declared the second Monday of October as the national holiday.

Well, now I have some tidbit information, but I still don’t have a clue as to what I am supposed to do for Columbus Day. I grew up in Austin, Texas. I miss it dearly and still to this day no matter how far north I get, I still consider Texas my home. Always will be. What can I say, Don’t Mess With Texas. Growing up in Texas I was introduced to a rich diversity of culture. I grew up eating pescado tacos, wearing authentic embroidered dresses, and dancing to salsa music. While I still do all of the before mentioned things, people now look at me like I am nuts. Apparently, embroidered mexican dresses aren’t seen very often in the hills of Tennessee and Virginia. For me, Columbus Day is a celebration of foundation. Digging deep into a rich history that reminds us all we came from somewhere other than where we are. The deepest, richest history I can personally remember is my upbringing in Texas. So for this featured blog I have compiled a list of sellers that have caught my eye with authentic representations of the cultural diversity I experienced as a child.

This next item is exactly the type of bag I used to see carried all over town. The versatility of this bag is only part of what makes it so great. The hand tooling is cool too, but for me it’s the smell. Does that make me weird? It ’s kind of like new car smell..it never goes away. As soon as you smell it, you know what it is. While I realize this isn’t the typical salsa dress worn when I was a child..many, many, years ago, I still love this dress. The problem? I have no where to wear it. Hopefully you do..because this dress is a gem. From the sheer leotard top to the micro mini fringe it couldn’t be any more perfect. I think it would look fantastic paired with some vintage turquoise and a retro denim jacket. Or maybe even a brown leather boho coat. This seller has tons of styles to pick from, all are just as unique and original as the buyer should be. That is the fun part about fashion, especially vintage fashion. Moccasins are a staple in Texas. Kind of like the Who’s Who of shoes. If you don’t have moccasins then don’t bother coming out of the house. Well, now it is much easier cause you can order them online, have them delivered and no one would ever know you didn’t have moccasins. There are a few things that come to mind when one thinks of  Mexico. I have spoken before about the vanilla, and of course there is Tequila. But another great find in Mexico is chocolate. A rich, dark, decadent chocolate that comes straight from the cocoa beans. This 1930’s Mexican silver broach embodies all without actually being chocolate. Still rich, dark, and decadent…just not fattening. This beautiful piece is offered by Metro Retro Vintage for $95.00. This seller describes her items in only ways that a true vintage seller can. The last item I have selected is what I remember most about growing up in Texas. The beautifully embroidered mexican fiesta dresses. I still have one to this day in a bright cheery yellow. I love it, and feel quite comfortable in it, even among the hills of the north. As a little girl, this dress would be a dream dress for me. The vibrant colors and soft threading make these dresses a comfortable “go to” staple for every wardrobe. Listed by GreenMarketVintage for $24.00, this dress is a child’s size 3 to 5. Most people may not realize it, but men can be greatly affected by breast cancer as well. Not just by helping to understand and support the women around them that are fighting every day battles, but also with a fight of their own. Men can also develop breast cancer. Although the statistics are lower, and perhaps not as much talked about, it happens. In honor of all the men out there affected by breast cancer we have found this vintage pale pink Guayabera button down shirt. I manage to keep my taste buds and bank account in check fairly well until the Fall and Winter flavors come back into play. Visions of Pumpkin Spice, Peppermint, Eggnog, and Gingerbread lattes all dance in my head while I’m nestled sweetly in my bed. Yes, I’m an addict and like all good addicts I want to share mine with you. Since I can’t fork over the Starbucks..partly due to the fact that I rather die than share any it, and partly due to the technology that would certainly be reduced to an ooey gooey sticky mess should I even make an attempt, I have decided to share some vintage finds that represent the array of Starbucks flavors.
Starting of course with the Pumpkin Spice.

These loafers are adorable. Although most people would pair them with pants I think they would compliment rather sweetly a fall skirt and textured leggings. Offered by Thrush for $34.00 they are certain to walk you most comfortably in style to any Starbucks nearby.

While the Pumpkin Spice flavor may be my all time favorite, it is only available in the Fall and Winter season. Luckily for me the local Starbucks attendants know me quite well and happily assist me in my ongoing addiction. Of course they do so by providing me my ultimate drug of choice until they no longer obtain the means to do so. When that fateful day comes I half heartedly switch to the Cinnamon Dulce latte. So far, it is the closest thing I have found to the Pumpkin Spice, without actually being the Pumpkin Spice. For lovely representation I have found this 1950’s Cinnamon and embroidery dress. Certain to make any vintage lover look good enough to eat, or drink in my case. I adore the neckline and the corded belt too. This dress is available in the GreenDragonLady shop for $28.50.

While I may have my two personal favorites I realize there are many addicts out there, admitted or not, that prefer different flavors. In honor of all those struggling with single roasted taste buds and depleted bank accounts I have searched out other exclusive Fall and Winter Starbucks flavor representations.

Luckily for all your Caramel Starbucks addicts out there, I believe your flavor of choice has been added to the “always available, never turn an addict away, make as many as junkies as possible, keep em coming, keep em coming” list and therefore is always handily there for your choosing. One of the popular Christmas and Winter flavors that will start to hit the a Starbucks store near you soon is the Peppermint Latte. With miniature bits of peppermint candies sprinkled on top of cascading whip cream, who can resist it. I can, as long as they have a Pumpkin Spice available. But that’s just me. I’m not sure I can resist this ever so lovely Peppermint striped vintage dress though. This candy coated must have is available at PenelopePupsVintage for $24.00.

I do love peppermint sticks. I prefer them to the hard peppermint candies. I love using them to stir hot chocolate or eggnog on a cold evening. It seems like the perfect way to end an already sweet treat. I found this lovely vintage faux pearl necklace and earring set. The coloring is so creamy the only word that could possibly describe it is Eggnog of course. My husband is not a coffee drinker. He is however a fan of caffeine. Once a week I get the occasion to possibly sleep in. Possibly because we have kids, and animals and life happens, and truth be told I am much more efficient in the morning than I am at night. During my once a week slumber fest my husband gathers the kids, sometimes dressed, sometimes not and carts them to Starbucks. Like all addicts need, my loving, supportive husband returns back to the roost with a piping hot Pumpkin Spice just for me. On occasion he will also pick up a Mocha for himself. I have come to find out that it usually depends on how hairy the car ride to Starbucks gets to be, since he does have the kids in tow afterall.

At this point I feel I should mention that our children DO NOT and WILL NEVER drink coffee as long as they live with me. There is enough abounding energy surrounding me and I don’t feel the need to amp it in any way. Therefore no children have been harmed in correlation with this ongoing admitted addiction.

To represent the Mocha I found this 1960’s day dress with tiny pin tuck pleats in the front and an eye catching button. Some may say “what’s in a word?”..but for me the answer can be a lot. Take Vanilla for instance. I love it. I love how it rolls off the tongue. I love the intoxicating somewhat exotic aroma of true vanilla. One of my goals in life is still to at some point in my life own a vanilla orchid. For now, since we have the before mentioned kids and animals I am not likely to take care of plant in the way an orchid needs attention. Whenever I travel to Mexico vanilla is always on my must buy list and it should be on yours too. The differences in real vanilla and what you buy at the grocery store is staggering. Even if you don’t have plans for a trip to Mexico anytime soon you can get a little Vanilla lift with this one of a kind to die for beauty. If this dress was my size I would be all over it. One of the other Christmas season flavors that Starbucks offers is a Gingerbread latte. As soon as we started collecting information for this blog we immediately thought of these Gingerbread Snaps corduroys. They are straight from the late 1950’s with hip side buttons closure, natural waist positioning and high water cuffs. We are all so excited to have them. Not just because they are deliciously adorable, but also because they are plus size. Vintage clothing sizes run considerably smaller than the sizes of today’s fashion. Nine times out of ten items we come across are marked in the Small or Medium category. So we get extra excited when we get pieces in that fit in the Large and Extra Large category.
