Autumn in Bloom

The high today is a mere 50 degrees. Warmer than some areas, cooler than others. For us, it is the typical Fall weather. A colorful assortment of reds, yellows and oranges blossoming in their own rite in every direction. I am a gardener by hobby and like others thoroughly enjoy the Spring season and all it’s offering of home grown bounty. But, unlike some I know, I enjoy the blossoms of Fall just as much and perhaps even more so. I realize that the assortment of shapes and sizes admired in Spring’s full throttle can’t be competed with in Fall. However, for me the lack of assortment is certainly made up for in color. Vibrant color. The rich reds, purples, oranges and yellows of the Mums, and varying trees is something to be admired.

Our kids will tell you time and time again that their favorite part about Fall is leaves. Not the colors, although they do admire them as I do, but the raking of them. No. We don’t have mutant Stepford children. No. We don’t hold twinkies out on sticks in front of their noses as they rake. The secret? What is more fun than a pile of colorful leaves? In Spring as all are admiring the carefully landscaped array of roses, hydrangeas, lillies and lavendar, the children are under constant NO TOUCH supervision. Not as much fun for them. But once Fall hits and the trees bloom into cascading waves of embers smiles instantly adorn little faces. Yes, they know that work is ahead. However they don’t seem to mind because the annual fun of running and diving thru piles of crinkling leaves certainly outweighs the occasional blister.

Once the season seems to hit full Bloom status, we all start to notice the colors everywhere we turn. Somewhere between the raked leave excitement, Halloween and the vats of homemade Apple Cider I always feel the need to make, fall has become a household favorite. It suits me, since it is by far my favorite season. I revel in the excitement they have and hope to share some of it with you.

Most of us are constantly going in and out during the fall season. While a coat is a necessity, and a great coat is nice to have, it is nice to be somewhat layered. The ever changing temperatures make it difficult to judge one location from the next. Who has their A.C on? Who has on the Heat? Do what I do and wear a coat, a great coat, over a short sleeve shirt. You can always keep the coat on if need be..but it offers versatility.

Do you ever get the urge to dance among the swirling tornados of fallen leaves? Maybe that is just me. It is one of my favorite things about Fall. I love the windy streets with overhanging branches adorned with colorful displays. As the cars pass the fallen leaves the wind beckons them to dance. It must be a Pide Piper of sorts because I hear the same faint howl summoning to join in.
